UPDATED: Are Face Masks Required in Your Community?

Most municipalities in the Archdiocese of Toronto have introduced bylaws requiring people to wear non-medical grade face masks or face coverings in indoor public places.

Municipalities have not taken a universal approach to face mask bylaws, so please consult your local government or your parish, if you have any questions.

However, most municipalities are requiring non-medical grade face masks and are providing exemptions for those under two years old and those with medical conditions.

Here is an overview of face mask bylaws in the municipalities of the Archdiocese of Toronto:

• The City of Toronto’s face mask bylaw went into effect on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 and includes churches.
• Dufferin County’s face mask bylaw exempts places of worship.
• Durham Region’s face mask requirements came into effect on Friday, July 10, 2020, but places of worship are exempt.
• In Peel Region, the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga have all passed bylaws requiring face masks. The bylaws came into effect on Friday, July 10, 2020 and includes Catholic Masses.
• Simcoe County will require face masks in indoor public places starting on Monday, July 13, 2020, including in churches.
• York Region will require face masks in churches starting on Friday, July 17, 2020.
