Statement from the Archdiocese of Toronto

Canonical Process Against Fr. Nino Cavoto Completed – Faculties for Ministry Have Been Restored

In August 2020, the Archdiocese of Toronto was made aware that Fr. Nino Cavoto was accused of alleged abuse against a minor. The allegation dated back to Fr. Cavoto’s ministry in a parish in the Archdiocese of New York, where he served between 1979 and 1983 while a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

The Salesian Fathers investigated and determined the accusation was “frivolous and lacking a semblance of truth.” This conclusion was recently accepted by the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. While a civil process is continuing in the State of New York, this concludes the canonical process against Fr. Cavoto. His faculties for ministry in the archdiocese have been restored.

The Archdiocese of Toronto looks upon any allegation of misconduct as an urgent matter that requires serious attention. Our full “Procedure for Cases of Alleged Misconduct” policy can be accessed by visiting: www.archtoronto.org/safeenvironment.
