On Nov. 3, St. Augustine’s Seminary of Toronto celebrated its annual convocation, marking the academic achievements of seminarians in their formation program (Bachelor of Sacred Theology and Master of Divinity) and lay students pursuing certificates, diplomas, and degrees offered through the Institute of Theology. This year’s convocation celebrated the first graduating class of the new Diploma of Philosophy, and the Licentiate in Theology and Patristic Studies – both programs drawing much interest locally and beyond.

As a recently approved Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology, established by the ecclesiastical charter of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See, St. Augustine’s Seminary now confers its own Bachelor of Sacred Theology, of which the Diploma in Philosophy is a part, and a Licentiate in Theology and Patristic Studies, two ecclesiastical programs of study.  This year, St. Augustine’s Seminary congratulated Rev. Canon Aaron Huberfeld, the first graduate of the Licentiate program. The enduring impact of patristic studies on theology has attracted students from around the globe.

Apart from forming future priests and permanent deacons, St. Augustine’s Seminary celebrates the achievements of many lay students. These students can choose from a variety of programs, offered in person, online, and hybrid, including a Master of Divinity, attractive to those seeking employment as military chaplains, Master of Religious Education, Master of Theological Studies, Diploma in Theological Studies, Diploma in Philosophy, Diploma in Lay Ministry, and Certificate in Theological Studies. Graduates of these programs are serving in a variety of capacities as chaplaincy leaders in schools, religious education teachers, administrators in the Catholic school system, lay pastoral associates, catechists, and youth ministers in parishes, and lay leaders in diocesan offices. The seminary website includes more information regarding these programs of study.

It was a joy to celebrate the achievement of these students, with the support and presence of seminary Chancellor, His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo, and the support and guidance of formators, faculty, and staff. “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)
